Being a Winter baby and part German… there is one thing that was bound to cross my path – Glühwein!!!
With winter rapidly approaching it was time to make my own. None of the recipes I got from the family sounded very appetizing. The idea that I just get those little tea baggies and use the premixed stuff also was not working for me. It was time to do a little research of my own…
After some experimenting I found 2 recipes that seemed to work for both my friends and me- my personal favourite is the one with lemon.
So here goes…
Select your favourite bottle of red wine (for this I like a sweeter wine). Place it in a pot and turn the heat to low.

Add your ingredients: 1 sliced orange or lemon, 3 whole cloves, 2 cinnamon sticks and 15ml sugar. I use brown sugar, it’s not as sweet and it seems to compliment the other flovours.
Gently stir the mixture until the sugar dissolves. Let the mixture continue to heat/ simmer for 8 to 10 minutes BUT NOT BOIL!!!! As soon as it boils the alcohol will start to evaporate.
Allow to cool a little before you serve it. This mix can be strained, bottled and stored in the fridge for later re-heating. Do not store it for too long (2 weeks max) as the citrus in the wine tends to go really sour, and in very bad cases starts to go moldy.
To recap… the recipe:
